The Expressions of Twined Flowers – Solo Exhibition by Yu-Huan HSIEH

The craftsmanship of the twined flower commonly used in traditional Taiwanese customs involves cutting, twining, twirling and embroidering. It is a cultural expression the Han people use for celebratory or worshipping purposes. In 2020, the twined flower was registered as an intangible cultural heritage in the “important traditional craftsmanship” category, demonstrating its significant value in the world of art.

Exquisite and elegant twined flowers are widely used among the Hokkien and Hakka communities. The Hokkien make red and gold twined flowers as a hair ornament for women at weddings or other special occasions. The Hakka people use colorful twined flowers in all sorts of shapes and sizes such as butterflies, turtles, pomegranates and chrysanthemumsas flower offerings, decorations or hair accessories.

The Expressions of Twined Flowers – Solo Exhibition by Yu-Huan HSIEHfeatures the artistry of Yu-Huan HSIEH, a heritage preserver of the twined flower from the Department of Hakka Affairs of Taoyuan. Upon retirement, HSIEH began learning the art of twined flowers in hopes of preserving the beauty of Hakka twined flowers. Kicking off from Chungli, Taoyuan, one of the largest Hakka communities in Taiwan, the exhibition aims to promote this traditional craftsmanship to highlight the abundance and beauty of twined flowers.
