然而舊的回憶經過時間的挪移會淡去甚至重組;

Yichia Liao: Summon Images – Memories Recorded and Reconstructed through Photography

“Huan Xiang” in Mandarin means “summoning memories” and “exchanging images.” It is an on-going project. Utilizing an autobiographical style, twenty-two important life events are presented as final images and produced digitally. Each theme in the images begins with analogue photographs, ranging from when the artist was one month old (the first image of himself that he recognized) to important people in his life, such as classmates, coworkers, parents, wife and children and even inspirational objects. These photographs are then incorporated into an image of moving water flowing through stones: the stones symbolize memories and water represents the passing of time, a continuous flow that trickles through the analogue photographs.

The “indexicality” characteristic of photography allows pictures to become keepsakes that directly link reality with the past. Memories disintegrate and reform in the course of time. New memories shape old ones, and as time passes by, numerous details are forgotten or reimagined. The merging of the analogue and digital images thus displays a result of the human memory, a combination of the “that-has-been” recorded by the camera with digital alternations that reflect the current state of mind. Only when combined does it portray a wholesome depiction that the mind understands as a complete image or piece of memory.

Toying with this concept of memory reproduced through the merging of analogue and digital photography and trying to bring it to a broader audience, the artist had the idea of exchanging memory through audience interaction. The very personal segments of his life that he chose to create can easily resonate with the day-to-day lives of ordinary people. Essentially, this project is a way to share, understand and record memory. Audiences who may relate to his work can provide their own personal photographs, and by keeping the element of water passing through stones as a symbol of time, the artist can replace his analogue images with their photographs to create a brand new personalized image. Liao hopes that by sharing and circulating the public’s memories, he can create a series that transcends personal documentation to encompass an entire society’s collective memory.
